The Bossier Arts Council in partnership with Bossier Parish Schools, Shriners Hospital, Shreveport Writers Club and the Gallery Fine Art Center will host children’s book author Richard Michelson for a three day residence in October (24-26th).
On Saturday October 26th at 10 am, Michelson will present a combination of a writer’s workshop and lecture at the Bossier Arts Council titled “No and I Can’t Dance Either: Writing Across Racial Lines” where he discusses the benefits and pitfalls of writing outside of your racial, and cultural e…xperience, and the validity in crossing lines.
Michelson has received various awards during his career as an author and his children’s picture books and poetry are some of the best received in the United States. Awards include the following: 1993 New Yorker 12 Best Children’s Books (Did You Say Ghosts?), 2006 National Jewish Book Award finalist (Across the Alley), 2010 New York Times: 8 Notable Children’s Books of 2010 (Busing Brewster), 2011 National Council for Social Studies-Notable Trade Book (Busing Brewster), 2009 Skipping Stones Multicultural Book Award (As Good As Anybody), and 1996 Children’s Book Committee Best Books of the Year (Animals That Ought To Be).
