July’s meeting was held on Saturday the 5th. Nine members were in attendance along with two new guests. We recognized several members who submitted their work with the Making the Mark Award. The winner for the first and second quarter Member Contest was announced. Congratulations to Joann Horton! Her short story titled “The Mystery at the End of Goodwill Street” won first place and the $25 prize.
Members were encouraged to enter our 3rd quarter mini contest. The theme for the third quarter contest is “Proof that Magic Really Does Exist” and is limited to 1,500 words (prose or poetry) due by the August meeting.
Re-orders were taken for the Club T-shirts and annual club membership dues were collected. Members were reminded to pay renewal dues by August 2nd to remain on the club roster. Please send an email to the club if you would like to renew by mail.
Members signed up to participate in our upcoming public speaker event on September 27 hosted by the Bossier Arts Council. This event will be open to the general public and will feature the work of Shreveport Writers Club members. More details to follow.
Our guest speaker was Alyssia Kirkhart. As an author of several published books, Alyssia explained her SMART method, a method used to carve out time from her busy life to write. Not only was her briefing motivational and encouraging, but wonderfully interactive with the members. Thank you for such wonderful advice, Alyssia!
The next meeting is scheduled for August 2, 2014. The guest speaker will be Vickie Hardin, Bossier Parish Library Outreach Specialist, who will discuss the many resources available at the Bossier Library including how they promote local writers.
