September Meeting

On Saturday September 6th, the Shreveport Writers Club convened at 10:00.  There were ten members and one guest in attendance.  Making the Mark Award was presented to Jim Freeman, DeAndre Holmes, and Philip Volentine for their recent submissions.  Congratulations to those writers!

After the Flash Writing Exercise, we discussed the club t-shirts and plans to celebrate our 80th year as an organization. Thanks to all the members who provided so many great ideas!  One event already in the works is a club anthology. This will be a collection of club member’s work, everything from short stories to plays, that will be published in 2015. More details will be provided at a later date.

Congratulations to Linda Thovson for winning the Third Quarter Member Writing Contest with her short story The Magic Garden. writers club2

The Fourth Quarter Contest features the following topics: When Kids Go Back to School, Things I Love About Fall, The Sun Sets Early, When the Lights Are Off, or I Hear Strange Noises. Members may submit multiple entries (up to 1,000 words per topic).

On August 30th, the Bossier Arts Council hosted our club as part of their Saturday Speaker series. The Writers Medley, as we called it, ran without a hitch and was a special moment for the writers who shared their work. We definitely appreciate the Bossier Arts Council for the wonderful opportunity! The next Writers Medley will be held at the Broadmoor Library in Shreveport on Jan 31st.

We also discussed the SWC Christmas party scheduled for Dec 6th before we participated in the Round Robin Reading. We ended the meeting with a brief mini-workshop about Author Biographies.
