July Meeting Recap

The Shreveport Writers Club met at The Agora Borealis on Lake St in Shreveport on July 6th, 2019.

The meeting began by greeting visitors, followed by the “Making a Mark” awards, recognizing any in attendance who submitted work to any publication the previous month.

In regular business, President Tiffany Pennywell discussed the upcoming Paired Expressions: Visual and Lyrical Art collaboration with the Shreveport Art Club. Writers were encouraged to volunteer to write short poems in response to art pieces submitted by art club members.  *If any writer is still interested in participating, he or she should email the club at shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com to find out details.*

Next the members participated in the flash fiction writing exercise. Writers were asked to write ten minutes on one of these topics:

  • Falling down the rabbit hole
  • This is what scares me least
  • A tale of conflicting colors
  • A perfume that could transform
  • Open topic

After writing for ten minutes, participants volunteered to share what they wrote with the group.

Next, the group welcomed guest speaker, Mack Swans. Swans is a recording artist and writer.  He spoke about his beginnings as an artist, with the school band in high school   and making beats on his dad’s phone using the Garage Band app.

At 19 he began writing seriously and recording. Swans mentioned his earliest musical influences, which included Drake, Childish Gambino, Kanye West and others. From these influencers, he learned the importance of meaningful lyrical content.

“Be true to your own voice, instead of trying to sound like what is popular, ” he said, while cautioning the group this route may take longer to get where one wants to be, but it will be worth it.

Swans also held a question and answer session with the group after his talk.

Shreveport Writers Club July Meeting

In July we held our Shreveport Writers Club Meeting at Rick’s Records. There, Rick gave us a pep talk about how to follow our dreams as writers. He also told us not to listen to other critics or even our own negative thoughts when it came to our writing. Rick also shared his experiences with publishing traditionally and self-publishing. We want to thank Rick for sharing his space and, wisdom and experience with the group.

We also want to give a shout out to a couple of members who gave readings at the Agora Borealis this month. They did a great job and I hope they continue sharing their work.

On August 4th, Saturday, we will be meeting at the Broadmoor Library. From 10am-12pm, come out to work on flash writing, have a discussion with us and share some of the work you’ve been focusing on.

We will also be giving an update on the secretarial position.

Visitors are always welcomed and remember to “Write on!”.

Thank you, New officers and an open secretary position

I want to thank everyone who came to the last meeting. We held our officer elections after our president, John, and our vice-preseident, Lela, stepped down.
We are all appreciative of the work that they put into the club. They both stepped up during a time when the club needed them.
Now, I have some big shoes to fill as I was nominated and voted in for president. Please, let me know what I can do for you. Also, please share with me ways that you believe we can get our club more out into the public.
Deondre, is also thankful for the nomination and vote for vice-president. He will also be willing to work with the club in anyway.
With me takinging on the president position, this means that the secretary position is open to anyone willing to take this on.
This position will include taking on the main social media responsibilities. It includes taking on postings for Instagram, Twitter, Google+, WordPress and Facebook.
I will be more than happy to assist you with the transition. Please comment below if you are interested or if you would like to nominate someone.

Thank you again and “Write on!”
