On Sunday, August 4th, 2019 marked the opening of “Paired Expressions: Visual and Lyrical Art,” a collaboration between artists and writers from the Shreveport Writers Club and the Shreveport Art Club. mlart

Shreveport Writers Club members were tasked with sending poetry in to Shreveport Art Club members. The visual artists created artwork inspired by the poems. In turn, the visual artists then asked the writers to respond to their art pieces.

The resulting “paired expressions” are on display through August 23rd at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, 3015 Greenwood Rd in Shreveport Louisiana.

July Meeting Recap

The Shreveport Writers Club met at The Agora Borealis on Lake St in Shreveport on July 6th, 2019.

The meeting began by greeting visitors, followed by the “Making a Mark” awards, recognizing any in attendance who submitted work to any publication the previous month.

In regular business, President Tiffany Pennywell discussed the upcoming Paired Expressions: Visual and Lyrical Art collaboration with the Shreveport Art Club. Writers were encouraged to volunteer to write short poems in response to art pieces submitted by art club members.  *If any writer is still interested in participating, he or she should email the club at shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com to find out details.*

Next the members participated in the flash fiction writing exercise. Writers were asked to write ten minutes on one of these topics:

  • Falling down the rabbit hole
  • This is what scares me least
  • A tale of conflicting colors
  • A perfume that could transform
  • Open topic

After writing for ten minutes, participants volunteered to share what they wrote with the group.

Next, the group welcomed guest speaker, Mack Swans. Swans is a recording artist and writer.  He spoke about his beginnings as an artist, with the school band in high school   and making beats on his dad’s phone using the Garage Band app.

At 19 he began writing seriously and recording. Swans mentioned his earliest musical influences, which included Drake, Childish Gambino, Kanye West and others. From these influencers, he learned the importance of meaningful lyrical content.

“Be true to your own voice, instead of trying to sound like what is popular, ” he said, while cautioning the group this route may take longer to get where one wants to be, but it will be worth it.

Swans also held a question and answer session with the group after his talk.

During our Feburary meeting, we were honored to have author Katie Bickham as our speaker. She shared work from her poetry book, “The Belle Mar”.20180203_104724

Katie likes to write poetry with historic background with settings around the world. Some of the poetry from her book has settings as far as the 1800’s.

“The Belle Mar” is set on a plantation in Louisiana from the 1811-2005. The characters are also diversed. The poetry is told through characters with different social and economical backgrounds.

Bickham writes her poetry, so that it is accessible to readers. She finds that it is a great tool for story-telling. With her story-telling, she finds that it is also importamt to perform well. Katie believes it is a great way to reach audiences. Katie also shared her researching habits and how to work with traditional publishing.

We want to thank Katie Bickham for coming to speak with us. She gave us great insight about traditional publishing in poetry.

At the next meeting we will be talking about the upcoming April Writer’s Medley.

We are also going to be holding our Officer elections in June. Dues will also be due.

Come out and enjoy the company of fellow writers and those who are inspiring to write.
