September Shreveport Writer’s Club Meeting

In September, we got together at the Broadmoor Branch Library for the Shreveport Writer’s Club Meeting.

september meeting

One of our member’s, John, led a Writer’s Spotlight on the importance of writing structure.  He also gave us advice on how it is important for the writer to take care of themselves.  Sometimes when we are in the midst of writing, we can lose track of ourselves.  Remembering to take care of ourselves during our writing time will help us to be even better writers.

This Saturday, October 7th, we will be holding our meeting at the Broadmoor Branch Library.  Our member, Deondre, will be leading the Writer’s Spot Light.

On October 8th, Sunday, there will be a Literary Event by Fluer De Lit at Broadmoor Library.  The club will have a table there and members are encouraged to come by and share and sell their work.  Also, come out to meet the contributors of the literary magazine.  The event will be from 1pm-3pm.

On October 19th, Thursday, we will be having our Writer’s Medley from 4:30pm-6:30pm.  This will be held at the Main Shreve Memorial Library Branch downtown.  Members, in good standing, will be able to share their works with the public.  There are 5 minute and 20 minute spots.  If you know that you will need a spot in between that time slot, please let us know.  You can let us know that you want to participate and the time you need by e-mailing us at shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com.  If you would like the template for the flyer to promote, please e-mail us.

The Anthology is going through its final stages.  Thank you for the patience, for we would like to make sure that we put our best foot forward with this project.

We appreciate all those who were able to make it to September’s meeting and we hope to see you this Saturday.

Remember, that visitors are always welcomed.

Bring some work to share with us and remember to, “Write on!”

May Shreveport Writer’s Club Meeting

image

We welcomed May the first Saturday of the month with a club meeting.  The members of The Shreveport Writer’s Club met at Broadmoor Library to network, talk and get inspiration from the other members.

Our President gave a great presentation on how writer’s should own their work.  He reminded us that we are not a product, but an audience.  As writer’s we should write what we want to write instead of trying to please every single person.  John also encouraged us to keep control of our work instead of letting others control it.  He also told us, when working with others, to keep true to our work and not to apologize  for it.  These statements of course led to an open discussion to where all members were encouraged to share their own opinions and experiences.

One of our members got to promote a literary magazine that she and some colleagues have put together.  It is called “Fleur de Lit Literary Magazine”.  They are currently taking submissions with the theme of “Female Friendship”.  This is open to writers in Caddo, Bossier, Desoto, Red River and Webster Parishes.  The deadline is June 30, 2017.  You can learn more at http://www.facebook.com/fleurdelit.

Three members participated in our Round Robin.  Two members shared excerpts from their stories and one member shared a poem by Bill Conley.  The poem was much appreciated, as we will all miss him.

At our next meeting we will have an assigned topic for Round Robin.  That topic will be “Purple”.  Come up with your best written work to share with us.

We want members to remember that Shreveport Writer’s Club t-shirts can be ordered online at teespring.com.  Just type in Shreveport Writer’s Club and it will take you directly to the shirt.

There will be meet-ups coming soon.  Keep a look out on Facebook and our other social media for those dates.

It is almost June and the election for officers is upon us.  If you would like to nominate yourself or someone please send us the information at shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com.

June is also the month to pay dues.  Dues are $20.00 and can be paid for on Paypal.  There is a link on our page.  When paying for dues on Paypal please make sure to add your name and e-mail address.  This way we will know who it is coming from and if we need to add you to our e-mail list.

June 3rd is our next meeting at Broadmoor Library in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It will be held from 10am-12pm.  We look forward to seeing you there and visitors are always welcome!

Remember to “Write on!”

March Meeting and Writer’s Medley

March saw a busy month for the Shreveport Writer’s Club.  We started the month off with a meeting at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library.

We were pleased to welcome two visitors to the group and two members were able to receive the Making the Mark Awards for submitting  their work.  We award these pens to members who submit their work to publications, online sites, journals and various means that gets their work out to the public.  We encourage our members to celebrate their creative work by sharing it with others.

The group had lots of fun with out Flash Writing Exercise.  The topics were, “Wrap it up!”, “The Season of…”, “Thanks for…”, “I don’t know about that…” and of course “Topic of choice”.  All topics were tackled by the club members and we appreciate those who shared what they wrote in that short ten minute challenge.

In new business, Jade Alexander has been named the Club Photographer.  We congratulate her and look forward to the photos she will capture for us.

The Shreveport Writer’s Club wants to give a big thank you to Joanna Ballard.  She gave an awesome speech at the meeting about story-telling, using different mediums and the importance of finding readers who will give you feedback.

During Joanna’s presentation, she had each members come up with a different word.  Each member then wrote a short story using each word and shared afterwards.  Nine members shared their story and we were able to notice how they were all different when brought together.  Each person had their own unique spin and influences on the words presented.  Thank you Joanna for challenging us with this writing exercise.

At the end of the meeting we were able to allow members to share the work they brought.  Members shared poetry, short stories and excerpts from stories.  Thank you for sharing your work.

On March 18th the Shreveport Writer’s Club we held our Writer’s Medley at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library.  Our President, John Brizzi, did a great job at hosting the event.  We want to thank everyone who participated and all those who came out to support the readers.  A lot of great creative work was shared.  The preparation and hard work behind each piece was shown.

After the Writing Medley, members met at Rollin in the Dough to socialize and wind down.

We look forward to seeing even more writer’s participate at the next Writer’s Medley later this year.

Tomorrow is our next meeting at Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It is from 10am-12pm.  We look forward to seeing you there.  Visitors are always welcomed.  Come to network and support other writers in the area.  Being around other writers also gives a sense of comradery.  Let’s grow the writing community in the Shreveport/Bossier and surrounding area together.

“Write on!”

November Meeting and Updates

The Shreveport Writer’s Club met at the Broadmoor Branch Library in Shreveport, Louisiana. We had quite a few people attend the November meeting and even had a new visitor.

We took time to remember our club member, Carlos Colon, who passed away. He will forever be remembered and missed by us, but his haikus will go on forever.

Our topics for our flash writing exercise were: “A great/terrible trip”, “Pride”, “I really admire…”, “Holiday Shenanigans” and Topic of Choice. These random topics make writing for ten minutes a challenge. We get a lot of great and entertaining written works from them.

The Round Robin ends our meetings where members can read excerpts of their work. We had six members share their work and we were all grateful to hear their hard work.

Our Writer’s Medley has been moved to February. This is a public event where members of good standing can read their work and out loud. There will be limited slots, so keep a look out for when we open them in January.

There has been an increased interest in the Critique Groups. We have added an extra one for a Friday each month. Thank you to our Vice-President Lela for spear-heading that for us.

This years Holiday party will be at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church. The address is 1915 Grover Place, Shreveport, Louisiana 71105. It will be on December 3rd, 11am-1pm.  Everyone bring finger foods and an original Holiday or winter themed work to share. (Remember that this replaces our December Club meeting).

For those interested in joining The Shreveport Writer’s Club, you can now join from our blog. There’s a link to join by PayPal. Please remember to leave your name and contact info so that we can add you to our e-mail list.

A reminder to all members: If you would like anything posted that is Club related to the other social sites please send that info to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com. This includes events, pictures or anything Club related you would like to share.

We hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and remember to “Write on”!

The Shreveport Writer’s Club has been busy this August.  On the 6th, we held our club meeting at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library.  We had a good number of new visitors and four new members to join us.

One member was able to receive the “Making the Mark” pen.  This pen is given to each member who has submitted their work within the last month to the public.  It can be for contest, publication and other media.  This is to encourage members to get their work out there.

Our Flash Writing Exercise topics were submitted by member, Su Stella.  They included: “I woke up under a mushroom”, “Looking out from the cage, he…”,
“At my first dance”, “Stupid, stupid, stupid” and “Topic of Choice”.  We had great writing from members in all of the four topics.

Remember that membership renewal is happening right now.  Our treasurer, Ken Shively, is available at all of the meetings to take your $20.00 dues.  This money covers you for the whole year.

Members discussed adding extra days for Critique Group.  We have continued discussion on this and will address it more at the next meeting.  The interest for add groups is very much appreciated.  Our next Critique Group is on Saturday, August 20th. from 10am to Noon at the Broadmoor Library.

The Writer’s Medley is around the corner.  It will be held in October.  The date and location is to be announced.

During the meeting we discussed having more speakers attend, who are able to give us advice and guidance in the writing world.  If you know of anyone who would be able to speak send us the information to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com.  Please also be sure to send us any suggestions for the club to that e-mail.

The meeting ended with thirty minutes of reading from members’ work.  We had the awesome experience to hear some greatly written pieces.

Today, we held a Meet-up at The Sleepy Hollow: Books and Gifts in Shreveport.  Owner, Kate Hesson, opened up her space to the Shreveport Writer’s Club to casually let us meet.  They are open to the public.  At these gatherings we talk about new ideas and activities for the club members.  Today we got some great ideas and were even able to share our experiences in writing.  Towards the end we were even able to help one of the members with some critiquing.

Thank you Kate for letting us use your space.

Our next writing club meeting will be on Saturday, September 10, at the Broadmoor Library from 10-Noon.  Visitors are always welcomed.

And remember to ”Write on!”
