We have our tent set up at the Health and Beauty Information Fair hosted by Queerport at Urgentcare EMS on Market. Writing has a lot of mental and emotional health benefits and we’re hoping to reach out to our community more. Come by to check out all of the health and beauty informtion that can be found around Shreveport. Others are also getting their tents up and yes, there’s a coffee tent! There are also two food trucks coming in!
This April 30th, we will have a table at the local lgbtq+ health and beauty fair at Urgent EMS. We will hand out club fliers and have a sign up sheet for anyone interested in getting club updates. We will set up at 9:30. The fair starts at 11am. Anyone is welcome to come by to help set up the tent, table, and chairs, and check out the other resources the fair has to offer.
Today is the SWC meeting at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library from 10am-12pm. M. L. Dumar will be guiding today’s meeting with a discussion on storytelling.
On April 2nd, we will be holding our club meeting at the Shreve Memorial Library Broadmoor Branch from 10am-12pm. We will focus on flash writing, casual critiquing, and a discussion on storytelling led by ML Dumar. Meet in Study Room A and bring a sample of some of your work if you would like to get a general overview on it. You don’t have to bring work to have critiqued. Just listening and discussing others’ work is as beneficial to learning and growing as well. This is a casual writer’s support group here to connect local writers with other writers. *There is a $20 yearly fee for the group (It helps pay for Zoom for online club meetings, future contests, and club activities.) Visitors are always welcome to the meetings to see if this club is a beneficial group to your writing journey. We hope to see you there and always remember to “write on”!
We got another limerick in for our Limerick Challenge.
There once was a fellow in bossier Who thought it was time for some closure So he laid on the floor Beneath an old door And no one could see that he lay there
If you would like to attend the SWC Critique Group this Saturday from 10am-12pm, please send an email to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com for the Zoom link.
We will be posting the entries for our limerick challenge as they are sent to us. You have until March 17th to submit your entry.
Our first entry is by Tiffany Pennywell
Our 2nd entry is from Earnest McDaniel
There once was a couple quite average The wife had the brains in the marriage So she took him by hand And explained to the man Suffrage and vassalage…and leverage
Hey, writer! You have a right to write for funzies!
And through St. Patrick’s Day—March 17, 2022—we’ll be highlighting limericks written by SWC members, Facebook page members, and friends.
Submit yours on the SWC Facebook page for approval and posting. If you’re not on Facebook, email to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com. We will also be sharing this to our blog.
What defines a limerick is easily found in Wikipedia and via Google, but see the image for a famous example that’s well done and Louisiana appropriate.
Below, you will also find a limerick—of sorts—written especially for this SWC event. It is not intended as a model! But we do encourage you to mind the helpful guidelines it provides.
“They may be rude, ribald, bawdy, risqué But on Facebook, the rules do rule the day The joke need not be naughty And can’t be mean or snotty But a limerick should make somebody pay”
Seriously, folks…keep it kind, but snarky is fine.
