Writer’s Medley 2019

The Shreveport Writers Club held their semi-annual Writer’s Medley on Friday, June 7th in the venue space at The Agora Borealis in Shreveport.

The writers shared food, fun and their writing with other members and assembled guests.

Thanks to the friends and family who came out to support the efforts of local writers. Thanks also goes out to The Agora Borealis for being such awesome hosts!

May Meeting

Shreveport Writers Club held their monthly meeting on May 4th at the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch of Shreve Memorial Libary.

Romance author, Liz Talley, was the special guest.  Talley spoke about her beginnings as a writer, as well as how her writing career has progressed over the years. Talley held a lengthy Q and A session with attendees and signed copies of her books afterward.liztable

The rest of the meeting concerned regular business, including the upcoming collaboration with Shreveport Art Club. Shreveport Writers Club President, Tiffany Pennywell, gave details on how the collaboration will work. She outlined how club members could participate and promised (and delivered) an email to follow up on the information provided at the meeting.

Pennywell reminded club members that the Writers Medley will take the place of the regular club meeting in June:

NOTE: Shreveport Writers Club Critique Group will meet Saturday, May 18th, 10 am to noon at the Broadmoor Library Reading Room. Bring a short piece of writing to share or simply come offer supportive suggestions for fellow writers. Everyone is invited.

Special Guest for February Meeting

Next month the SWC is changing things up just a bit. We have a special guest! Maple Sudds, author of No Blood in the Turnip:Memoirs of a Codependent, will read selections from her book and hold a question and answer session afterward.

This meeting is at a special time: 11:00 am. It is also in a special place: Shreve Memorial Library–Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, 2111 W Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport. The meeting will be held in their lovely reading room. We’re really hoping this open area will invite people in to join us, to hear Maple and to find out what Shreveport Writers Club is all about.

November Meeting

The Shreveport Writers Club held their regular monthly meeting at 10 am on Saturday, November 3rd. This month the writers met at Retro 521 Cafe in Bossier City.

Club President, Tiffany Pennywell, welcomed visitors and members. The first order of business was presenting the “Making a Mark” awards. Members who submitted any piece of writing to any publication are given a commemorative writing pen as encouragement. Writers this month “making a mark” were M. L. Dumars and Loretta Casteen.

The group then moved on to the Flash Writing Exercise. The writers were asked to write on any of these topics:

  1.  I didn’t know my daughter knew the queen…
  2. A baker, a ballerina, and the ultimate ninja…
  3. He looked me straight in the eye and said…
  4. The turkey was almost done, but…
  5. Open topic

After members shared their writing, the group moved on to other business.

 

December Meeting News : close up photography of snowman

   The December Holiday meeting location was discussed, but not decided upon. Those interested are encouraged to check back on this site or on the Facebook group once the meeting place for December is finalized.

The December Holiday meeting will include the yearly potluck meal, games, readings and fun.  Special guest for the December meeting will be novelist, Maple Sudds, who will discuss self-publishing her memoir No Blood in the Turnip.

 

Next, club Vice-President Deondre Holmes announced the winner of the October short story contest.

For her short story, “Windows” Stephanie Bullard won a $25 gift card and spooky Halloween shot glasses.

Congratulations Stephanie!

The theme and deadline for the next contest will be announced at the December meeting.

The writers then participated in another writing activity. Each person was asked to write for ten minutes about their “perfect writing situation.”  Afterwards, writers shared their work, if they wished to.

The Shreveport Writers Club Critique Group will be held at Retro 521 on Saturday, November 17th, from 10 am to 12 pm.

Vice-President, Deondre Holmes also invited anyone interested in evening meet-ups back to Retro 521 every Wednesday evening in November from 5 to 7 pm for critiques, sharing work and encouragement during NaNoWriMo.

The final activity was the Round Robin reading. Anyone who brought writing to share was encouraged to do so.

Happy 4th/Saturday Meeting

June Meeting

This Saturday is the Shreveport Writers Club meeting. Meet us at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library. We meet from 10am-12pm. Bring your work and share it with us during our Round Robin Session.
We will also be talking business by discussing the future of our officer positions.
Come on out and let us see you there.
Also, bring a visitor. The more the merrier.

Speaker for May Terrence Flemons

We are now hearing from today’s speaker, Terrence Flemons. He is an writer/artist who works on collaborations with different artists. Terrence is talking about his experiences with networking, how to work with different artists with varying genre backgrounds and different platforms.

Upcoming April Writers Medley and Meeting

REMINDER!
Next Tuesday we will be hosting the Writers Medley at Bon Temps Coffee Bar. Current members of the club will be sharing their creative work with the public.

This is an all ages event that is free to the public. Bring guests and remember visitors are always welcomed.

We still have open slots for the event for anyone who is interested in being a part of it. There are 5 minute and 20 minute slots. If you just need 10 minutes then that is okay as well. You can read any of your own written work. It can be in any format or genre.

If you do not have anything to share please come by to support fellow members. They work hard on their pieces to present them. It also lifts their spirits and encourages them to see you there.

2nd REMINDER
This Saturday we will be holding our Shreveport Writers Club meeting from 10am-12pm. Due to lack of available space we will be holding it at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church 1915 Grover Place, Shreveport, Louisiana 71105.

It’s March and tomorrow we will be holding our Shreveport Writer’s Club Meeting. For this month and April we will be holding it at the Broadmoor Presbyterian Church. The building is located on 1915 Glover Place, Shreveport, LA 71105. It will be from 10am-12pm. Make sure to bring pens and pencils, for our flash writing exercise. Also, bring a sample of some of your work to share during our Round Robin at the end.

During our Feburary meeting, we were honored to have author Katie Bickham as our speaker. She shared work from her poetry book, “The Belle Mar”.20180203_104724

Katie likes to write poetry with historic background with settings around the world. Some of the poetry from her book has settings as far as the 1800’s.

“The Belle Mar” is set on a plantation in Louisiana from the 1811-2005. The characters are also diversed. The poetry is told through characters with different social and economical backgrounds.

Bickham writes her poetry, so that it is accessible to readers. She finds that it is a great tool for story-telling. With her story-telling, she finds that it is also importamt to perform well. Katie believes it is a great way to reach audiences. Katie also shared her researching habits and how to work with traditional publishing.

We want to thank Katie Bickham for coming to speak with us. She gave us great insight about traditional publishing in poetry.

At the next meeting we will be talking about the upcoming April Writer’s Medley.

We are also going to be holding our Officer elections in June. Dues will also be due.

Come out and enjoy the company of fellow writers and those who are inspiring to write.
