September Shreveport Writer’s Club Meeting

In September, we got together at the Broadmoor Branch Library for the Shreveport Writer’s Club Meeting.

september meeting

One of our member’s, John, led a Writer’s Spotlight on the importance of writing structure.  He also gave us advice on how it is important for the writer to take care of themselves.  Sometimes when we are in the midst of writing, we can lose track of ourselves.  Remembering to take care of ourselves during our writing time will help us to be even better writers.

This Saturday, October 7th, we will be holding our meeting at the Broadmoor Branch Library.  Our member, Deondre, will be leading the Writer’s Spot Light.

On October 8th, Sunday, there will be a Literary Event by Fluer De Lit at Broadmoor Library.  The club will have a table there and members are encouraged to come by and share and sell their work.  Also, come out to meet the contributors of the literary magazine.  The event will be from 1pm-3pm.

On October 19th, Thursday, we will be having our Writer’s Medley from 4:30pm-6:30pm.  This will be held at the Main Shreve Memorial Library Branch downtown.  Members, in good standing, will be able to share their works with the public.  There are 5 minute and 20 minute spots.  If you know that you will need a spot in between that time slot, please let us know.  You can let us know that you want to participate and the time you need by e-mailing us at shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com.  If you would like the template for the flyer to promote, please e-mail us.

The Anthology is going through its final stages.  Thank you for the patience, for we would like to make sure that we put our best foot forward with this project.

We appreciate all those who were able to make it to September’s meeting and we hope to see you this Saturday.

Remember, that visitors are always welcomed.

Bring some work to share with us and remember to, “Write on!”

March Meeting and Writer’s Medley

March saw a busy month for the Shreveport Writer’s Club.  We started the month off with a meeting at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library.

We were pleased to welcome two visitors to the group and two members were able to receive the Making the Mark Awards for submitting  their work.  We award these pens to members who submit their work to publications, online sites, journals and various means that gets their work out to the public.  We encourage our members to celebrate their creative work by sharing it with others.

The group had lots of fun with out Flash Writing Exercise.  The topics were, “Wrap it up!”, “The Season of…”, “Thanks for…”, “I don’t know about that…” and of course “Topic of choice”.  All topics were tackled by the club members and we appreciate those who shared what they wrote in that short ten minute challenge.

In new business, Jade Alexander has been named the Club Photographer.  We congratulate her and look forward to the photos she will capture for us.

The Shreveport Writer’s Club wants to give a big thank you to Joanna Ballard.  She gave an awesome speech at the meeting about story-telling, using different mediums and the importance of finding readers who will give you feedback.

During Joanna’s presentation, she had each members come up with a different word.  Each member then wrote a short story using each word and shared afterwards.  Nine members shared their story and we were able to notice how they were all different when brought together.  Each person had their own unique spin and influences on the words presented.  Thank you Joanna for challenging us with this writing exercise.

At the end of the meeting we were able to allow members to share the work they brought.  Members shared poetry, short stories and excerpts from stories.  Thank you for sharing your work.

On March 18th the Shreveport Writer’s Club we held our Writer’s Medley at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library.  Our President, John Brizzi, did a great job at hosting the event.  We want to thank everyone who participated and all those who came out to support the readers.  A lot of great creative work was shared.  The preparation and hard work behind each piece was shown.

After the Writing Medley, members met at Rollin in the Dough to socialize and wind down.

We look forward to seeing even more writer’s participate at the next Writer’s Medley later this year.

Tomorrow is our next meeting at Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It is from 10am-12pm.  We look forward to seeing you there.  Visitors are always welcomed.  Come to network and support other writers in the area.  Being around other writers also gives a sense of comradery.  Let’s grow the writing community in the Shreveport/Bossier and surrounding area together.

“Write on!”

SWC February Meeting

Thank you to everyone for a very successful February Shreveport Writer’s Club meeting.

We saw some new faces with three new visitors.  All of whom we got to introduce ourselves to in the beginning.

Six writers were able to receive the Making the Mark pen.  This is a pen that we give to those who have submitted their work for publication, contests and other outlets that get their work out their publically.  The Shreveport Writer’s Club encourages our members to share their creative work.

During the beginning of the meeting we held our Flash Writing Exercise.  This exercise helps to keep your mind and your writing quick.  You have ten minutes to  write from five topics.  This month we had: “It’s a conspiracy!”, “If I had a time machine..”, “An arrival”, “The difficulty of…” and of course Topic of choice.  Ten present were brave enough to share what they were able to write.  We always get some interesting work from the exercise.

In old business, the Anthology is still on for the group.  Right now our Activities Director, Deondre, is wanting members in good standing to send in what work, bios and pics that they would like to add.  The cut off date for submission is March 31st.  Your writing has to be an original piece  and there is no word limit. Email all submissions to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com

The Shreveport Writer’s Club holds a Writer’s Medley at least twice a year.  This year’s first Medley will be March 18th at the Broadmoor Branch Library in Shreveport, Louisiana.  Right now there are 5 minute and 20 minute spots open.  These are first come first serve.  If you would like to read and share your writing at this event send your name to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com.  Let us know if you would like a 5 minute or 20 minute slot.

At this month’s meeting we were delighted to have local author, Pamela Hamilton, speak to us.  She told us about her journey in writing a novel.  Pamela shared with us on how she came up with the idea to write her book, what made her think she could do it and the outline she used.  She also told us about her surprise ending at the pitch that she uses for agents.  Pamela also shared with us some of the reading material she went over in preparing to write her book such as “How to Write a Book in 28 Days” and “Writing for Story”.

We appreciate Pamela Hamilton for the preparation she did in coming to speak to us about character and story development.  Many questions were asked by members and visitors that she graciously answered.  We wish her luck in her writing endeavors.

At the end of each meeting we hold a Round Robin.  This is a 30 minute time where excerpts of work can be shared.  We had one poem and three short stories that were shared.  Thank you to those who were willing to share their creative work.

Our next meeting with be held March 4th at the Broadmoor Branch Library in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It will be from 10am-12pm.  Visitors are always welcomed. We’ll be happy to see you there and remember to “Write on!”.

Shreveport Writer’s Club January Meeting

On January 7th, The Shreveport Writer’s Club met at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library.  We started our meeting with awarding three  members who submitted their work.  Each month we give a “Making the Mark” pen to each member who has submitted their work towards a publication, contest, journal and any public forum.  This encourages members to share their writing and expand where their creative work reaches.

Our Flash Writing Exercise encourages members to think creatively in a limited set time.  We take ten minutes to create a written piece based on the topics that are given.  This month the topics were, “What a show!”, “That one time when I…”, “The creepy guy”, “I didn’t see that coming…” and of course “Topic of choice”.  At the end of the exercise each member is given a chance to read what they have come up with.  Seven members were brave enough to share their work and we applaud each of them.

The Shreveport Writer’s Club Anthology is still in its editing phase.  This month is the last month that members in good standing can send bios and pictures that they would like to have with the work they submitted.  Please send this information to shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com.  Also, send any anthology related questions to that e-mail.

The President of the club has issued a challenge: “Over this year, what are you going to do to improve your craft and writing skill?”  Let’s take up this challenge and learn how to grow as writers.

Our next meeting will be held on February 4th at the Shreve Memorial Broadmoor Branch Library in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It will be held from 10am-12pm.  We will have writer, Pamela Hamilton, as our guest speaker.  She has just finished writing a book and will discuss with us how she came up with the idea to write the book, what made her think she could do it, the outline used, her surprise ending and practicing pitch for book to agents.

The Critique Meeting will be held February 18th at the Broadmoor Library from 10am-12pm.  Critique groups are held for members to share their work.  Here you can have other members listen to excerpts of your writing and critique any way you wish.

On March 18th we will hold the Writer’s Medley at the Broadmoor Branch Library.  This will be from 10am-12pm.  We will be asking for volunteers at the February meeting.

At the end of each meeting we have a Round Robin Reading.  This allows members to share an except of their work to be heard.  This month we heard an except from a story, two poems, and a story written in a Japanese folk story style.  Thank you to all the members who shared.

Remember that members of the group can share helpful writing events and links to the Facebook group.  This helps keep your fellow writer’s in the loop of any beneficial information that will help their craft.

If you have any questions or comments please send them to shreveporwritersclub@gmail.com.

Shreveport Writer’s Club September Meeting

September’s Shreveport Writer’s Club meeting discussed some important events that will be coming up this year.

Yesterday we held the meeting at Broadmoor Branch Library.  Three visitors attended with two of the visitors becoming members.  We’d like to welcome Meaghan Long and Stephanie Newbern.  Your creative work and energy will be a great addition to our club.

A total of six attendees recently shared their work publically.   Each were able to receive a “Making the Mark” pen.  We reward these to those who have taken the next step to promote their work.  The club encourages members to showcase the creative work they work hard on.

Our flash writing exercise always produces some interesting and creative pieces.  This meeting our topics were: “Thanks for the…”, “Hey, remember that guy?”, “I could really use a…”, “Where is that?” and Topic of choice.  We appreciate those who shared their work with is.  It’s not easy to think of and write out a piece in ten minutes.  This exercise keeps up mentally and creatively on our toes.

More Critique Groups will be added.  Right now our regular group meeting will be at the Broadmoor Branch Library from 10am-Noon on 9/17 on Saturday.  Our next Critique Group will be at Bon Temps in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It will be 6pm-8pm on 9/20 on a Tuesday.  This meeting is where members can bring their work and have it analyzed by grammer, wording, flow or whatever they feel they need work on. Critique Group is for members who are in good standing.  This means that they have paid their membership dues.

If you have not paid the membership dues of $20 (for one year membership)  but would like to, you can at our next regular club meeting.  Visitors are always welcomed but we would love for you to become a fellow member.  Presently we are looking at future perks that only members will be able to take advantage of.

In October we will be holding a Writer’s Medley.  We are looking at having it at The Sleepy Hollow: Books and Gifts Shop.  This will be open to members who would like to read their works to the public.  There will be a limited number of slot available.  If you are interested in a slot e-mail us at shreveportwritersclub@gmail.com with your information.

Members, Tiffany Pennywell and Deondre Holmes led a discussion about their experience in promoting their self-published books “Seemingly Strange and Unusual Tales” and “Window to My Soul” at local events.  They gave an enthusiastic speech about the benefits of being vendors at conventions.  At the conventions they were able to network with other artists and vendors.  They stated that proper and creative branding of your work allows you to be able to sell it to the public. The writing duo also explained that promotion events also leads to other opportunites.  They encouraged the members listening to not be afraid to put their work out there.

At the end of the meeting we have the Round Robin Reading.  This is where members can share work that they’ve written.  We were appreciative to hear a continuing story written by our President, John.  May more members bring pieces to the next meeting to be shared.

We, at the Shreveport Writer’s Club, would like to remind you to “Write on!”

Shreveport Writer’s Club Busy April

On April 2nd, we held the meeting for the Shreveport Writer’s Club at the Bossier Arts Council.  We were happy to see many faces that we have been seeing of late.  It’s great to see visitors and members coming to these meetings regularly.

Many members were given the “Mark Your Mark” writing pen, which signifies that they are getting their written work out to the public.  We encourage our members to publicly promote their work.  This takes courage and we congratulate and admire all of you who do this.

We had our Flash Writing exercise, which consist of writing on selected topics or a topic of your choice for ten minutes.  This gives the writer a set timeframe to get a piece of writing done or started.  It also stimulates the brain, giving you a chance to dust off your writing cobwebs.  At the end of the exercise those who want to can share what they’ve written.  We get a lot of creative and interesting works that we get to listen to.

Our speaker for the month was Kathryn Morgan.

IMG_2683 (2)

She is a Master Tax advisor, writer, spirted and knowledgeable speaker and instructor.  Kathryn was an amazing guest speaker, who gave us a great deal of information about how writers should brand themselves.  She also spoke to us about the importance of knowing your work and making sure you get it out to the public.  Kathryn readily asked the multitude of questions that were given to her by our members. At the end of the day she even decided to become a member of the Shreveport Writer’s Club herself.  We want to thank Kathryn for the awesome lessons she taught us that day.

The follow Saturday we had a great Writer’s Medley at the Broadmoor Branch Library in Shreveport, Louisiana.  There many of our members volunteered to publically read short stories, poetry and other written works.  We are so proud of those who had the courage to get up and present their works.  They were readily accepted by the audience.

April has been a creative busy month.  We thank all those who have been a part or it.  Next month we will hold our Writer’s Club meeting on May 7th.  It will be at the Bossier Arts Council in Bossier City, Louisiana.  We start at 10am and end at 12pm.  Visitors are always welcomed!

We look forward to seeing you there and “Write on!”
