February Meeting

Fifteen members and one guest attended February’s Shreveport Writers Club meeting held on the 7th at the Bossier Arts Council Annex.  The meeting began with the presentation of the Making the Mark award to Jim Freeman, Deondre Holmes, Ken Shively, Bill Conly, Barbara Moore, John Brizzi, Katie Roxberry, Philip Volentine, and June Dowis.  Congratulations, writers!

Several members participated in the Flash Writing Exercise and shared their work on topics such as My Feet Were Killing Me, That Was a Crazy Thing I Did, Lost Luggage, and The Tour That Gave Me More Than I Bargained For.

Orders for club t-shirts continue to be collected.  If you’d like to order a club t-shirt, please bring $12.00 cash or check to the next meeting.  We discussed old business, such as the Writers Medley event held on Jan 31st and our upcoming 80th Anniversary Anthology.  New business discussions included our next Writers Medley event which is scheduled to coincide with the release of our 80th Anniversary Anthology later this year.  Another upcoming event is scheduled for Saturday February 28th at 10:30am at the Bossier Arts Council Annex building.  We are excited to announce special guest speaker John C. Brewer, author of The Silla Project and Multiplayer, will be speaking to the SWC about writing and the value of fiction.

Several ideas were brought for future activities for the Shreveport Writers Club. Some local businesses are interested in hosting small events to promote our local writers. Thanks, Deondre, for doing most of the legwork and getting the ball rolling with this!

Congratulations to Bill Conly for winning the Fourth Quarter Writing Contest with his piece titled A Room Within a Room!  Great job!

The topic and guidelines for the Second Quarter Writing Contest will be announced at the next meeting and the Critique Group will meet on Feb 21st from 10am – 12pm at the Broadmoor Library.  As a reminder, only Shreveport Writers Club members who are current in their dues are allowed to participate in both the Quarterly Writing Contests and the Critique Group events.

February’s meeting finished with the Round Robin Reading in which several members shared some of their written work.  The next meeting will be held on March 7th in the Bossier Arts Council annex at 10am.  Guests are always welcome to attend!
